Kimono workshops in NYC

During and after the Fudangi exhibition I wrote about in my last post, I also scheduled my first time ever kimono related workshops and some photo shoots. (Because how often do you have the chance to capture the NYC skyline with kimono?) (着物姿をニューヨークで撮るならインパクトあるかなと思って・・笑) Prior to my trip I asked my followers on social media what kind of workshop they would like to attend when I am in New York / what they need help with in regards of kimono. And the majority...

Fudangi Kimono in New York

In October I travelled to New York to take part in an exhibition as well as hosted some kimono workshops and photo shoots while in the city. Almost a year ago I was asked if I'd like to contribute and style two kimono outfits for a small exhibition curated by Spree Kingyo (from Kingyo Kitsuke) in Germany and Yuki Hamada (from Kimono Modern) in Japan. I was super excited about this opportunity. The event was held at the Globus Washitsu (Traditional Japanese...

Kimono x Red Spider Lily

In September the red spider lily is blooming in Japan. Since I started setting up photo shoots I dreamt of creating beautiful visuals with this mystical flower. Here the Higanbana (彼岸花) is associated with farewell and death. Probably also due to the flowers having been planted close to cemeteries. They are poisonous so animals don't get near them. Often seen near rice or vegetable fields they act as a natural fence. Not too far out from Tokyo (close to Kawagoe, Saitama) is...

Kurotome night @ Tokyo Kimono Show

On the 30th of April I joined the fun "Kurotome Night" at the week long Tokyo Kimono Show at COREDO near Nihonbashi. For that event about a 100 people joined in the dress-code "kurotomesode" (黒留袖)which is a formal black kimono with a colourful artwork only in the bottom third of the kimono. This kimono usually will be worn by the mothers of a couple at the wedding reception. There are also a few other occasions to wear this kimono, but not...

Year end kimono fun

Time seems to fly faster and faster these weeks. It's December and suddenly I feel overwhelmed with work - but that's a great thing after having a little too silent past months. Colder weather and the years final month calls for kimono events and the popular "忘年会" Year-end parties! So I found myself running around between 4 appointments yesterday. One was the FKI展 - Fashion & Kimono & Ikimono exhibit which is basically a joint pop up store in the famous Isetan...

How to: Nihongami

This post is long overdue but now I am finally getting to it: How to make Nihongami - a traditional Japanese hairstyle I am by no means a professional nor do I know a lot about the traditions and different ways of tying this hair! However some people seemed to want to try this when wearing kimono, so I am sharing my insights here. It is not the hairstyle of a Maiko or Geisha, but something more generic I suppose. What you need: ...
