Every year in May, a festival to celebrate the opening of Japan for trade in 1854 by American Matthew Perry is being held in Shimoda, Izu. The foreign big ships with black colour and charcoal steam-powered were called "black ships" by Japanese. Those black ships landed in Yokosuka and also Shimoda and the first trade agreement between Japan and the US was signed and Shimoda used as a port for the US. Chichibu Meisen Hogushi Weaving

(Continuing from my previous article about Chichibu Meisen Museum & Nassen dyeing.) If you have read my introduction of Meisen and Nassen dyeing you might be curious now what would happen to those silk threads after they got their lovely design and colour? How to: Space Invader Kimono

For a while now I really wanted a half-half coloured kimono (aka. Unfortunately they are very hard to find and if you come across one, they are usually pretty expensive. Being as poor as I am right now my only chance was to make something myself. However making a kimono from scratch seems kinda scary - so I thought to myself: What could be the easiest way to make such kimono? Right! Cut two kimono in half and sew the...
