Kimono workshops in NYC

During and after the Fudangi exhibition I wrote about in my last post, I also scheduled my first time ever kimono related workshops and some photo shoots. (Because how often do you have the chance to capture the NYC skyline with kimono?) (着物姿をニューヨークで撮るならインパクトあるかなと思って・・笑) Prior to my trip I asked my followers on social media what kind of workshop they would like to attend when I am in New York / what they need help with in regards of kimono. And the majority...

Kimono photoshoots in Kyoto

At the beginning of this month I went to Kyoto for some work and photo shoots. Well, and once there I also have to eat all the delicious things in my favourite restaurants. Like eel, yuba and warabimochi.. This kimono was actually handed down to me from my husbands grandma. I love it! The patterns are so unusual. Wearing it with a modern lace obi and my self-made union jack obidome. I was super careful to not catch a cold, but over night...

Year end kimono fun

Time seems to fly faster and faster these weeks. It's December and suddenly I feel overwhelmed with work - but that's a great thing after having a little too silent past months. Colder weather and the years final month calls for kimono events and the popular "忘年会" Year-end parties! So I found myself running around between 4 appointments yesterday. One was the FKI展 - Fashion & Kimono & Ikimono exhibit which is basically a joint pop up store in the famous Isetan...

How to: Nihongami

This post is long overdue but now I am finally getting to it: How to make Nihongami - a traditional Japanese hairstyle I am by no means a professional nor do I know a lot about the traditions and different ways of tying this hair! However some people seemed to want to try this when wearing kimono, so I am sharing my insights here. It is not the hairstyle of a Maiko or Geisha, but something more generic I suppose. What you need: ...

「きものサローネ2016」Kimono Salone

Yesterday I jumped back into my kimono, did my hair and went to Kimono Salone - a 3 day event / exhibition of kimono brands in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. But let's start from the beginning - as always with my outfit: I finally tried to do Nihongami again. It was quite a fight, because I used a cheap stupid extension which doesn't work well for Japanese hairstyles. But I somewhat won the fight. Instead of Japanes-y accessoires I used a vintage comb I...

Black Ship Festival 2016

Every year in May, a festival to celebrate the opening of Japan for trade in 1854 by American Matthew Perry is being held in Shimoda, Izu. The foreign big ships with black colour and charcoal steam-powered were called "black ships" by Japanese. Those black ships landed in Yokosuka and also Shimoda and the first trade agreement between Japan and the US was signed and Shimoda used as a port for the US.
