Kimono in Germany and UK

by

Wow.. this was a long Blog break.
I headed kind of last minute to my hometown in Germany for Christmas and New Years.

Ah and… Happy belated New Year to you!
Hope this year brings a lot of happiness and success.

So as I said I went to Northern Germany and also visited London for a couple of days so was quite busy with meeting friends and family and eating way too much. haha.

The town I grew up is called Lüneburg. A small but very beautiful town with many old buildings from hundreds of years ago.

During most of December we have Christmas markets everywhere in Germany. Especially in the dark, the litte houses serving goods and food are very pretty.

The most popular drink is Glühwein aka. mulled wine. It warms you up instantly.

Because I never wore proper kimono in Europe before, I prepared three outfits and brought them all the way. (Unfortunately the kimono took half of my suitcase already!!)

On Christmas Eve it was quite cold and windy so I chose my self-made wool kimono with Christmas themed colours for the obi and else.

Several centuries ago Lüneburg had a real harbour to receive and sell wares. This old crane was used to lift heavy things from and onto the boats.

After New Years I tried to arrange a small kimono meet-up in Hamburg, but not many people could join on a weekday (obviously).
However two lovely girls actually came and we had a walk through the city, took some pictures and chatted away about kimono and life while lunch.

Also the Elbphilharmonie – a very modern concert hall just opened its doors in Hamburg while we were there.

I love Hamburgs alternative boroughs so much as well with all the graffiti artworks and independent shops and restaurants. Many graffiti artists actually get commissioned by the city now to spray on old dirty walls. I think it is great!

In Germany we basically ate too much every day – all day, but it was great. My favourite meal of the day is probably breakfast in Germany with all the bread and cheese.

Ah, and here a few more pictures of my Hamburg kimono outfit. An antique striped kimono where I sewed a lace collar on, paired with my favourite python obi from Rumi Rock and original made tabi.

Rather spontaneous we also went to London to meet some friends and see something different.
My last kimono outfit was all set for a sunny day (which we spent indoors though. ehheh) at the Tate Modern art museum.

The kimono is a meisen omeshi mix I think and I got it from the Hazuki kimono shop in Tokyo. I paired it with a yellow antique obi and boots.

Also found this amazing faux fur jacket in London! Yay!

All in one it was a very calm holiday. It was great to see all my family and friends though. Thanks so much!

On our return to Japan we were greeted by Fuji-san who majestically guarded Tokyo.
Good to be home!!

I’m very excited about this new year and hope I can expand my work with kimono and take part in fun projects.

Hello, I’m Tomoko. I like kimonoes very much. Your report was fun. I like to travel , and especially U.K is my favorite. So I enjoyed to read and wach this page. I have learned “kimono dressing” for more than 12 years. Now I have a licence of dressing kimono. I am happy to make people ware kimono. I am really interested in your way of thinking and passion for kimonoes. If I have something to help you for your ideas, I will be happy.
I will follow your tweet. Thank you. Tomoko Sato
