Kamakura – off the beaten track

Last Summer I visited Kamakura again after many years. Since I already saw the main tourist attractions various times (big Buddha statue, large Shrine..) this time, seeing uncrowded and not as familiar locations was my goal. For those of you who aren't familiar, Kamakura used to be the capital of Japan in 1192 "the Kamakura period". The city is located along the coast close to Yokohama and perfect for a day trip from Tokyo. Kamakura - Off the beaten [...]

Grand Canyon in Yukata

Last month I went to the United States for a bit - including Las Vegas, its nearby Grand Canyon and California. You probably already know me better - of course I did not go there in Western clothing! Why let the chance slip to wear kimono or at least yukata in such a scenic location? Since I could only travel with a tiny suitcase this time, bringing a full Japanese kimono outfit wasn't an option - but a yukata (cotton kimono) [...]

Kimono x Red Spider Lily

In September the red spider lily is blooming in Japan. Since I started setting up photo shoots I dreamt of creating beautiful visuals with this mystical flower. Here the Higanbana (彼岸花) is associated with farewell and death. Probably also due to the flowers having been planted close to cemeteries. They are poisonous so animals don't get near them. Often seen near rice or vegetable fields they act as a natural fence. Not too far out from Tokyo (close to Kawagoe, Saitama) is [...]

Autumn feels

Last week we had a sudden curtain of snowfall here in the Tokyo area and I was a little worried - as I didn't have time yet to go out and appreciate the autumn foliage properly. Thankfully 2 days later we had bombastic weather so I jumped back into my kimono to embrace the yellow and red coloured trees. On my check list I had this lovely Japanese garden in Kokubunji called 'Tonogayato garden' so I got up early to get [...]

Black Ship Festival 2016

Every year in May, a festival to celebrate the opening of Japan for trade in 1854 by American Matthew Perry is being held in Shimoda, Izu. The foreign big ships with black colour and charcoal steam-powered were called "black ships" by Japanese. Those black ships landed in Yokosuka and also Shimoda and the first trade agreement between Japan and the US was signed and Shimoda used as a port for the US. To celebrate the friendship between the two countries the "kurofune [...]
